Real Madrid are expected to be in a good financial position despite the coronavirus pandemic, so it could be the right time to replace their ageing captain.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos is a colossal figure in the squad and has been one of their most important players for over a decade now. The central defender is arguably the greatest ever in his position and an overall product. Aerial battles, slide tackles and physical challenges are just some characteristics in his catalogue.

Sergio Ramos’ leadership qualities need no mentioning as he is the only captain in the modern era to have lifted the UEFA Champions League on three successive occasions. His absence was felt when Los Blancos were thumped by Ajax Amsterdam and Paris Saint-Germain over the course of 2019 and they look like a whole new setup without Ramos.

Besides his leadership and defending which are certainly extraordinary traits, Ramos is also a deadly goal-scorer who comes up clutch. The Spain international has incredible heading from set-pieces and is a composed burier of free-kicks and penalties. All his attacking attributes have clubbed to hand him over a century of career goals.

Given that he is 33 years old, Real Madrid have to start planning for life after their Sergio Ramos. Zinedine Zidane as well as the centre-back have recognized that very well and are thought to have asked their side’s hierarchy led by club president Florentino Perez to land RB Leipzig’s central defender Dayot Upamecano, Don Balon claims.

Dayot Upamecano has been under prominence since the last few years and is expected to be among the very best defenders. The Frenchman has shined on the books of the Bundesliga side but is expected to follow club teammate Timo Werner to the exit door. Arsenal, Barcelona, Chelsea and the Manchester United are all interested in him besides Real Madrid.

RB Leipzig are probably aware of the fact that their defender’s future lies away from the Red Bull Arena and have set an estimated price worth 65 million euros on him. Upamecano is a superb player, so his price tag is fully justified. The defensive strength that he brings is brilliant, but perhaps he’s not the right fit for the Whites.

Zinedine Zidane’s men are a very attacking side and Ramos himself too is a player who takes risks while going forward. The Spaniard’s distribution of the ball is phenomenal as is his leadership and in that regard, Matthijs de Ligt could be a super signing. Juventus have not been able to make the most of one of their most expensive signings.

Matthijs de Ligt seems to be unsettled in Turin and has been tipped to head to Spain just a year since arriving into Turin. However, both, Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus are in agreement to give the youngster more time to settle in. But if things don’t improve, even the centre-back himself could opt in favour of a switch to Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Ajax Amsterdam’s former captain would be the perfect replacement for Sergio Ramos. The fact that he’s failed to settle in a very defensive league doesn’t take anything away from his qualities and in fact, La Liga would see him bloom. De Ligt is a born leader who led the Eredivisie side to a blockbuster season.

Just like Sergio Ramos, he is great with the ball at his feet and is an audacious and bold character at the heart of any backline. Moreover, his goal-scoring doesn’t need much introduction either given he scored beautiful headers against Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur, apart from scoring a good number for the Bianconeri as well.

Who do you think is the most ideal replacement for Real Madrid’s captain?
