Barcelona defender, Junior Firpo.

West Ham and Wolves plot a January switch for Barcelona outcast

Barcelona have made it clear that they will not buy any players without selling a few, and have now received interest for an outcast.

Barcelona have several gaping holes to fill in their squad but considering their crippling financial situation, the club would be unable to do so without selling players. Ronald Koeman has made the board’s job a tad bit easier by candidly including some of the first-team players out of his squad with January exits looming.

Philippe Coutinho was among the players that was initially rumoured with a departure from Camp Nou in January itself but the manager’s faith in the Brazilian may see him remain at the club until the end of this season. One of the players who could indeed be on the move midway through the season is Junior Firpo, according to Sport.

Junior Firpo arrived from Real Betis last summer as a potential replacement for Jordi Alba but has been no good in the full-back role. The 24-year-old has had more off days than good ones as his intermittently good performances have taken a toll on the Catalans’ defence. Unfortunately, Firpo contributes in neither defence nor offence.

Koeman has largely relied on Alba for the duration of this season, which have limited Firpo to only seven appearances in all competitions this season. West Ham and Wolverhampton Wanderers have kept a close eye on the player’s situation and keep themselves open to the prospect of landing him during the winter transfer window.

West Ham have just one natural left-back in their squad, in the shape of Aaron Cresswell which does enough to justify their interest in Firpo, especially with the tight schedule involving three domestic competitions in England. Wolves meanwhile have none as their two options are both players who are on loan only until the season ends.

Firpo has a price tag of 22 million euros and considering that he was signed just one and a half year ago, the Blaugrana are not considering any discounts on the quoted price tag. Barcelona are already coping for the remainder of the season without the left-back and have decided to promote Alex Balde from the youth team.
