Tottenham Hotspur shortlist Chelsea centre-back to rebuild their defence

Tottenham Hotspur have shortlisted Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma to rebuild their defence after parting ways with Toby Alderweireld.

After six seasons at Tottenham Hotspur, Toby Alderweireld has departed the club for Al-Duhail SC. The Belgian’s departure leaves a huge void to fill next season and Nuno Espirito Santo has shortlisted an ideal candidate to replace Alderweireld.

According to Football.London, Tottenham’s Managing Director Fabio Paratici, has identified Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma as a potential transfer target for the summer. Zouma currently faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge as Thomas Tuchel has his eyes set on Sevilla’s Jules Kounde to further solidify his defence.

Fabrizio Romano reports that the Blues are in advanced negotiations over Kounde’s transfer and have offered the 26-year-old in the deal to reduce the total transfer fee. Tuchel’s side have already agreed to personal terms with the French centre-back until 2026 but are yet to strike a deal with Sevilla. With that being said, Kurt Zouma is not part of the former Paris Saint-Germain manager’s plan and is expected to be offloaded this season.

Tottenham have kept a close watch on Zouma and consider him to be the perfect replacement to their Belgian stalwart. The French centre-back is keen on securing a prominent role as a starter and Nuno Espirito Santo can certainly guarantee him a crucial place.

Currently, Spurs have Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez, Joe Roden and Japhet Tanganga as their centre-back options. Kurt Zouma is a superior defender than all the mentioned names and his ability to play out from the back along with his build-up play will make him a pivotal member under the former Wolverhampton Wanderer manager’s system.

The 26-year-old is currently valued at 25 million euros making him an affordable target for the summer. However, the Lilywhites have to push for a transfer immediately or they could potentially lose their primary target to Sevilla as part of the swap deal for Jules Kounde.

Tottenham also have their eyes set on Argentina’s standout performer in the Copa America 2020, Cristian Romero. However, the Atalanta centre-back has a long list of suitors at his disposal which makes his signing complicated this summer.
