Jose Mourinho of Tottenham Hotspur is in the market for a striker and the Portuguese coach wants to reunite with his former pupil
Tottenham Hotspur has achieved great heights in the 21st century as the club has finished second in the Premier League once and even reached the UEFA Champions League final in the most nail-biting manner after Lucas Moura pulled off the unthinkable in Amsterdam.
However, the Lily Whites are yet to win a trophy and with Jose Mourinho as the manager, winning a trophy remains the top priority. The Portuguese coach is aware that the club is heavily reliant on Harry Kane to bail the club out when needed, however, when the English striker is injured, then the north London side seems to be a far weaker team.
Kane’s injury issues lately have been a common sight and Mourinho has considered dealing with the situation by signing a proven goalscorer as a secondary back up striker for the Englishman. According to reports from the Mirror, the former Chelsea manager is pondering over signing a former pupil.
Diego Costa of Atletico Madrid is Tottenham’s wanted man. Costa has been described as an “Animal” and a “Warrior” by Jose Mourinho. The pair together at the Stamford Bridge has won two Premier League titles from 2014 to 2017 and Mourinho knows how to make the best out of the aggressive striker.
However, the 31-year-old has seriously regressed with age that has seen him score just five goals in the 2019/20 season for Atletico Madrid. Although Costa’s prime might be done dusted as of now, the player’s warrior attitude still remains alive and his aggressive style of play would work well with Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese coach expects the striker to be the first defender of the side and Costa’s pressing and aggressive style would match the needs of Mourinho. The north London side has been bashed by the media this season for their poor defensive record and the reluctant pressing by the team. Costa’s addition could certainly change it around.
Diego Simeone is willing to part ways with the Spanish striker and Tottenham Hotspur would not have to break the bank either as the player is valued at just 15 million euros in the market.
Would Diego Costa be the ideal backup for Harry Kane?
