Tottenham Hotspur have shortlisted two midfielders from the Ligue 1 as Nuno Espirito Santo is keen on rebuilding the engine room.
Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a major summer rebuild. The Lilywhites have taken large strides towards their objective after appointing Fabio Paratici as the Managing Director of football followed by Nuno Espirito Santo’s appointment as the first-team manager.
The former Wolverhampton Wanderer’s coach has gotten down to business and has drawn up a list of two midfielders to target from the Ligue 1, according to the Express. Houssem Aouar and Renato Sanches have been identified as primary targets for the summer.
The former is currently closing in on a deal with Arsenal and seems like an unlikely proposition due to his hefty price tag. Meanwhile, the latter had an excellent individual campaign with Portugal in the Euro 2020 and his performances have once again brought him under the limelight as they did in the same tournament in the 2016 edition.
Sanches is on contract with Lille until 2023 and is valued at 30 million euros on the transfer market. However, the 2020-21 Ligue 1 champions will certainly look to sell their star midfielder for a lot more after his performances with his national team.
The 23-year-old would be a phenomenal signing for Spurs mainly due to the attacking threat he offers from midfield. The former Bayern Munich ace is an incredible dribbler whose style of play mainly relies on progressive passes towards the opposition territory and dribbling past opponents. He also has an eye for goal and can score from long-range.
Apart from his technical abilities, Renato Sanches’ physical conditioning is impeccable. The Portuguese international muscled his way through France’s dominant midfield which had the likes of Adrien Rabiot, Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante in what proved to be his standout performance at the Euros.
The competition in Tottenham’s midfield is intense but Sanches’ versatility could be a key factor in securing him a prominent role in the squad. Currently, Spurs have Giovani Lo Celso, Dele Alli, Pierre-Emile Hojberg, Tanguy Ndombele and Moussa Sissoko. However, since the 23-year-old can play as a central midfielder and as an all-out attacking midfielder, he has an advantage over the other midfielders. His work rate is far superior to that of Alli and Lo Celso which means that Santos would most likely choose his compatriot over the mentioned duo.
Barcelona and Liverpool are also reportedly interested in signing the 2016 Golden Boy winner which makes it a lot more complicated for Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites will have to move fast and expedite negotiations if they are to sign Renato Sanches this summer.
The Portuguese international might be Tottenham’s best option currently in the market to improve their midfield as signing Aouar looks improbable at the moment.
