Having already signed Bryan Gil, Cristian Romero and Pierluigi Gollini in the summer transfer market, Tottenham Hotspur want to make add Barcelona’s Martin Braithwaite to their squad.
Tottenham Hotspur have been on the lookout for a striker in the last few weeks amid talk that Harry Kane wants to leave the club this summer. The Englishman has been vocal about his desire to depart for greener pastures to win silverware but denied skipping training last week in order to force a transfer to Manchester City.
Whether or not Kane stays, Spurs remain keen on signing a striker who they believe will play with the forward rather than as a replacement for him. Gareth Bale chipped in with 16 goals in all competitions last season while on loan at the club but his return to Real Madrid makes it evident why the Lilywhites want a goal-scorer to support Kane and Son Heung-min in the attacking duties.
Spanish outlet Sport has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in recruiting Barcelona frontman Martin Braithwaite in the upcoming weeks. Dusan Vlahovic has been tipped to move to north London, however, considering that nothing has materialized with the Serbian yet, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side has considered the Dane as an option.
Braithwaite is an energetic forward who is capable of scoring a respectable number of goals. Despite being below many of his teammates in the pecking order at Barca, he struck seven times and assisted four goals last season in all competitions. With more minutes and a more starring role than he plays at Camp Nou, the player is bound to return good numbers at Tottenham.
His performances at the European Championship were a reason why Spurs decided to add him to their shortlist of strikers. West Ham are also thought to be interested in the player who Barcelona are open to selling. Braithwaite was an emergency signing by Barcelona in January 2020 after long-term injuries Ousmane Dembele and Luis Suarez.
Although he was a short-term option for the club, he was given a four-year contract by the Catalans- who are now in an infamously wretched financial situation. Ronald Koeman also does not consider Braithwaite as a part of his plans and hence, the 30-year-old will be allowed to depart. There has been no official contact between the two clubs, however.
Spurs will not need to pay a large sum of money to sign Braithwaite and will have the advantage in their favour given Barca’s need to gather funds. The Catalans are struggling to sell the deadweight and are now in a position where they must accept any offer that comes on the table. However, most players, Braithwaite included, want to stay at the club.
Even before Lionel Messi departed, the Danish striker wanted to continue his career in Barcelona itself and the Argentine’s exit will only leave him wanting more opportunities. In all fairness, the former Leganes star could have a more prominent role at Barcelona than at Tottenham this season due to the La Liga side’s inability in registering new signings.
One of the only ways in which Tottenham could convince Braithwaite into signing for them is by offering him a contract with a similar or better wage than he currently earns while on the Blaugrana’s books. How Nuno Espirito Santo rates him and the role that the player is offered in the squad will also play an integral role in resolving such a complicated puzzle.
Do you think Braithwaite will leave Barcelona and join Tottenham Hotspur this summer?
