Liverpool could see one of their most experienced players leave for new pastures with a Serie A side showing active interest.
Liverpool will begin their Premier League defence against Leeds United next month and may have a new player or two at the start of their campaign. However, Jurgen Klopp has been told that he must sell to sign any more players.
As per Read Liverpool, Lazio are now eyeing Xherdan Shaqiri as a replacement for their failed David Silva transfer. Shaqiri arrived at the Anfield back in 2018 from Stoke City when the Premier League champions triggered his release clause of 13.5 million pound following his side’s relegation.
The Swiss international however, has insisted that he would like to stay at Liverpool and fight for a place in the XI, but the Reds might be tempted enough to sell him as there seems to be little chance of him getting a regular role. The 28-year-old’s sale will only bring in profits for the Reds.
Shaqiri’s playing time hasn’t amounted to much at Liverpool and that is largely because of better players being available to Klopp, which is why his sale may be better off for all parties involved. The midfielder’s only noteworthy performance last season came in a Merseyside Derby victory in a season wherein the former Bayern Munich man has made only seven appearances.
Liverpool have certainly enough to ponder about as they need to start looking for a partner for Virgil Van Dijk and groom him to eventually replace the former Southampton central defender. The Dutch International is currently 29 and probably has another three years to compete at the highest level with top-order consistency.
Liverpool have also been linked closely with Thiago Alcantara in recent times and according to Fabrizio Romano, personal terms are not a problem now with the player willing to join. Bayern Munich don’t want anything less than 30 million euros for the midfielder but Liverpool aren’t willing to spend that much when they can sign him for free in a year’s time.
The management certainly has quite a lot to think on and they could be seen selling Shaqiri before inevitably Thiago before the end of the summer window.
