Real Madrid gear up for a busy summer transfer window and are open to selling several players including their vice-captain.
After three consecutive dormant transfer windows, Real Madrid are prepared to go all out this summer to sign their wanted transfer targets. However, Los Blancos will first focus on clearing the deadwood and selling players to raise funds for their operations.
One of the many players that could be heading out this summer window is the vice-captain, Marcelo. The Brazilian left-back has fallen down the pecking order at the club in the past three seasons and has struggled to refind his form. The signing of Ferland Mendy in 2019 led to Marcelo receiving a secondary role in the team due to his poor defensive contribution.
The 33-year-old has dropped a level lower in the left-back position, following the emergence of Miguel Guiterrez from Castilla who performed well above expectations in the first team during the business end of the 2020/21 season.
Having said that, Real Madrid have no reason to hold on to their vice-captain whose contract expires next season. The veteran left-back is currently valued at just 10 million euros on the transfer market and should be sold immediately rather than seeing out his contract. AS reports that Fenerbahce have shown interest in Marcelo and are keen on signing him along with AS Roma’s Edin Dzeko for next season.
As of yet, the Turkish club have not yet made an official offer to Los Blancos for Marcelo. However, if they are willing to pay anywhere close to 10-15 million euros for the Brazilian, Real must close the deal and move on. The club will not need to sign a replacement as Miguel Guiterrez has shown immense potential to compete for a spot with Ferland Mendy next season.
The Merengues also have the option of triggering Sergio Reguilon’s buyback clause which is set at 40 million euros. Zinedine Zidane was not a huge fan of the Spanish left-back but with the Frenchman exit, Reguilon could be handed a lifeline to make his way back into his boyhood club.
