Real Madrid are willing to pay record fee for La Liga defender in a bid to replace the potentially outgoing Sergio Ramos in the summer.
Real Madrid are all set to bring in defensive recruits this summer as they look to fill in their loopholes at the back end of the pitch. Their backline has not been tidy in the ongoing season, more so due to their defensive resilience in the previous campaign. In 2019/20, Los Blancos boasted the best defence in Europe’s top five leagues- a record which they are failing to maintain this time around.
Barring their recent displays against Getafe and Valencia, the Merengues’ defence has remained inconsistent this term. Injuries to both Dani Carvajal and Sergio Ramos have piled up pressure on the present roster, but fortunately enough, the likes of Lucas Vazquez and Nacho Fernandez have stepped up to cover for the absentees.
On the transfer front, the La Liga giants have reportedly shortlisted a quality defender ahead of the summer transfer window. Goal reports that Real Madrid are contemplating a move for Pau Torres in a bid to replace him with their departing captain, Ramos.
The Villareal defender has become one of the prominent faces in the Spanish top-flight over the past couple of seasons. His calm presence and his ability to read the game has helped him develop into one of the top defenders in La Liga. The Spaniard also maintains a robust presence aerially and therefore has always had an upper hand in winning the long balls.
In the ongoing league campaign, the centre-back has made 23 appearances for the Yellow Submarine and has chipped in two goals. Unai Emery’s side have been heavily reliant on the services of the 24-year-old and he has now become an integral member at the Estadio de la Ceramica.
Meanwhile, Zidane’s side are fighting to retain the services of their captain but unfortunately have not found any luck in handing an extension to the veteran defender. In response to their current crisis, Madrid have almost secured a replacement for their departing skipper as they have agreed on terms with David Alaba. The Austrian recently declared that he is looking for a new club after the end of this season and he is tipped to sign for the Merengues.
The 13-time European champions are required to pay at least 65 million euros in order to attain the signature of Pau Torres. Real Madrid are not ready to pay the quoted sum and hence are looking to settle for a fee south of the price tag. With Ramos likely to depart the club this summer, it is imperative that Madrid land a central defender and Torres’ characteristics make him worthy enough to succeed the outgoing captain.
