Real Madrid are going to begin their La Liga defence in the upcoming weeks without making a single signing this summer.
Real Madrid will go through this year’s summer transfer window without making a single signing, marking a first such occurrence in two decades. However, Florentino Perez and Zinedine Zidane are already planning strongly for next season in which their primary target remains Paris Saint-Germain ace Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe has been fantastic in recent years and a move to the Santiago Bernabeu seems inevitable for the France international. He is a mercurial goal-scorer and already a very matured player aged just 21, meaning he will satisfy every criterion that the Whites were after, and more importantly, prove to be a potent goal-scorer in attack.
With that signing already being a non-adjustable priority, the Merengues have turned their attention to another of France’s finest footballers, Dayot Upamecano, as per Don Balon. The RB Leipzig central defender is a solid player and displayed his true credentials in the Champions League at Lisbon, and subsequently in with his national side.
Dayot Upamecano recently extended his contract with the Bundesliga giants, but that is unlikely to help his club’s cause of shrugging away suitors. Manchester United are among those who are already interested in signing him and it is fair to say that Real Madrid are very strong candidates to land him as well.
Los Blancos intend to complete his transfer in the new calendar year for a fee of 50 million euros to ignore any hikes in price caused by the European Championship later in the summer. Having said that, they will also offload Nacho, who is now 30, to make room for the former RB Salzburg superstar.
Sergio Ramos is also 34 whereas Eder Militao has not yet convinced enough to partner Raphael Varane at the back, thereby citing a genuine need for a central defender in Spain’s capital. But one may have doubts over whether the latest shortlist is indeed the right man, or there need to be some extra attributes in a player for replacing the captain.
Upamecano is no doubt an incredibly good central defender, but it simply does not look like he has the voice to be as good a leader like Ramos is. When the Spain international is absent on the pitch, his leadership is what is missed most by the Merengues, and therefore, someone at the back who can lead by example may be a characteristic Zidane may want.
In that regard, Juventus centre back Matthijs de Ligt perfectly fits the bill. The Netherlands international has been linked with a switch to the home of the 13-time European champions ever since his Ajax Amsterdam days, but he ultimately opted in favour of the Serie A. Nevertheless, a move to one of the world’s undeniable clubs could always be on the cards.
Besides being a world-class defender, de Ligt is a phenomenal leader who has everything to lead a club even like Real Madrid’s calibre. The 21-year-old is also very good in the forward areas of the pitch and has been an asset from corner kicks for both, Ajax and Juventus, and may well be a decent source of goals for Real Madrid.
Considering the fact that Sergio Ramos has a lot of extraordinary characteristics, there is no doubt that de Ligt would be his best replacement. At this point in time, he is committed to a challenge at Turin, but in a relatively easier division than most in Europe, he will prosper soon and would want to take up a new challenge, possibly at Real Madrid.
