Real Madrid set their price for Manchester United’s prime transfer target

Real Madrid have set a price tag on Raphael Varane who is on Manchester United’s radar.

Raphael Varane could potentially be ending his decade long association with Real Madrid this summer. The French centre-back’s contract runs out in 2022 and he is yet to ink fresh terms amid interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are on the lookout for a centre-back to rebuild their backline and have narrowed their search down to Varane.

The 28-year-old is reportedly keen on a new challenge and a move to the Premier League seems to be on top of his bucket list. According to ABC Deportes, Real Madrid are open to the idea of parting ways with the centre-back and have set a minimum price tag of 50 million euros for a permanent sale.

Carlo Ancelotti currently has the likes of David Alaba, Eder Militao, Nacho Fernandez and Jesus Vallejo as his first-team defenders for next season, provided that Raphael Varane follows the footsteps of Sergio Ramos towards the exit door. The Merengues could potentially lose both their first-choice defenders in the same transfer window but have decided against the idea of signing a replacement for either, according to Marca.

Florentino Perez has instead decided to channel all financial resources towards the possible signing of Kylian Mbappe in this transfer window. The objective at the Spanish capital is to raise funds to sign the 22-year-old Frenchman and Varane’s possible sale to Old Trafford could be part of the cause to sign Mbappe.

Los Blancos have made an attempt at renewing terms with Frenchman by offering an improved contract, however, the player wants 12 million euros annual wages that Real Madrid are not willing to provide at the moment. The club has recently made an offer worth 7 million euros per year which has been rejected from the player’s camp.

Although the Red Devils are in the driving seat to sign the 2018 World Cup winner this summer, they are yet to meet Real Madrid’s minimum quotation. United have reportedly offered 45 million euros, five million less than the amount that Florentino Perez is demanding for Raphael Varane. However, it would not be too difficult a task for Manchester United to meet Los Blancos’ asking price.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is working towards building a team that could potentially challenge Manchester City to the Premier League title next season. They have already agreed to principle with Borussia Dortmund over the purchase of Jadon Sancho and are now closing on Varane’s transfer.

United are slowly are working their way back to the top and the possible signing of the 28-year-old centre-back could be pivotal in rebuilding the side.

Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane paired together would certainly form a rock-solid centre-back partnership. The backline would be a formidable force with Varane and Maguire’s presence along with the attacking threat from Luke Shaw and the defensive prowess of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from the flanks.

Are Manchester United heading in the right direction by possibly signing Raphael Varane this summer? Who else should the Red Devils consider signing to further improve their squad?
