Zidane considers a move for the Manchester City star who could solve the Los Blancos’ problems up front and provide the much-needed spark.
Real Madrid have plenty of attacking options up front with the likes of Karim Benzema, Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo, Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio all in the Los Blancos squad. However, except for the sole case of Benzema, all other forwards have not been consistent enough, which sees Zinedine Zidane searching for other options in the summer transfer window.
As reported by Foot Mercato, the French manager is interested in signing Riyad Mahrez who could add the much needed spark to Real Madrid’s attack. The Algerian international has been a standout player for Pep Guardiola in the last month, and has been a regular starter. He has scored seven goals and assisted another four goals in the Premier League season so far. Guardiola is a huge fan of Mahrez’s abilities and it will be a very difficult task for Zidane to entice the Algerian to make a switch to the Spanish capital.
“Mahrez’s last games have been exceptional. He played really well. He has a special quality ,” said Pep Guardiola recently. “He is a player who dances on the field. He doesn’t lose any balls in the game. Riyad makes the extra pass we need. He draws the opponents onto the field and then passes behind,” Guardiola continued.
Guardiola’s words for Mahrez show how important he is to this City squad. Only the might of Real Madrid can snatch away the Algerian forward from Manchester City. Eden Hazard who arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu in June 2019, was tasked with duty of replacing Cristiano Ronaldo. However, the Belgian forward has never got his Madrid career kickstarted due to several injuries coupled with average performances when fit.
Real Madrid could either consider replacing Hazard with Mahrez or the Algerian could be signed to help solve the issues on the right-wing. Currently, the club have Asensio, Rodrygo and Lucas Vazquez as their right-wingers. Gareth Bale is also an option, however, the Welshman is on loan at Tottenham Hotspur and will most likely be sold at the end of the season.
Meanwhile, apart from the 20-year-old Rodrygo, both Marco Asensio and Lucas Vazquez have more or less futile on the right-wing when attacking. Signing Mahrez next summer could be the key to solve this issue as the former Leicester City winger is currently basking in fine form. However, Los Blancos must reconsider their options before making a move since Riyad Mahrez is currently 30-years-old.
