Real Madrid are plotting a surprise transfer for a Paris Saint-Germain forward which could be completed in the coming weeks.
In recent years, Real Madrid have kept a close eye on several players from Paris Saint-Germain. Over time, the Whites have been linked with the likes of Marquinhos, Mauro Icardi, Neymar and most recently Kylian Mbappe. Neither Florentino Perez nor Zinedine Zidane have made a secret of their interest in the latter two.
However, in a recent development, Los Blancos are contemplating over a move for Edinson Cavani. The Uruguay international left Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent in June and played no part even in their Champions League campaign following the end of lockdown. Cavani is currently without a club despite possessing sublime qualities.
Don Balon claims that James Rodriguez’s departure to Everton is expected to be a factor that may compel the board into thinking over a potential switch for the ex-Napoli star. Following James’ imminent departure, the club will encash 25 million euros in transfer fees and also save a considerable amount on its wage budget.
Karim Benzema was the one-man wreaking crew in the frontline last season and had nearly twice as many league goals as the next highest scorer in the team, who was Sergio Ramos. Despite winning La Liga, the Merengues have struggled in finding a source for goals apart from the French striker given injuries faced by Marco Asensio, Luka Jovic and Eden Hazard.
Cavani on a short-term deal could be a brilliant addition to the defending La Liga champions’ roster. He has scored a respectable number of goals in the Serie A and Ligue 1, as well as the Champions League. Moreover, at the age of 33 and without a club, the striker isn’t in a position to bargain for wages or a starting berth providing Madrid with enough advantage.
One of the big disadvantages of the deal however could be the fact that Luka Jovic is forced to find greener pastures. The Serbian scored just twice in his first season after a 65 million euros switch from Eintracht Frankfurt and signed a five-year deal. However, he didn’t get too many chances and took to settle in all fairness to him.
Should Real Madrid sign Cavani, he may be pushed further down the pecking order to make room for an experienced player. In what could be a move to build-up a goal-scoring attack for the shorter run, the Whites may end up losing a world-class player who has all the qualities to be a long-term success at the Santiago Bernabeu.
