Real Madrid has been surprisingly linked with Paris Saint-Germain’s all-time top scorer
The 2019/20 season has seen Real Madrid turn a new leaf in their history after a nightmare of a season under Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari. Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos, and Luka Modric have been praised for their clutch performances throughout the season that has led to Real’s recent success, however, it is Zidane that has become a master at making the most of veteran players this season by rotating the squad perfectly.
Diaro GOL reports that the Madrid based side has been linked with Edinson Cavani who is currently a free agent after Paris Saint-Germain refused to renew terms with their all-time top scorer. Although Cavani is 33-years-old, the former Napoli man is an unstoppable force to reckon with in the penalty box on his best days which still seems to be far away from coming to an end due to his impressive physique.
However, Cavani signing for Real Madrid just does not make sense as Zidane has Karim Benzema, Luka Jovic and Mariano Diaz at his disposal and the Frenchman would certainly not require another 33-year-old player in his squad.
The Uruguayan striker has been linked with Real’s local rivals as well, Atletico Madrid and his services would be of ideal use to Diego Simeone since Cavani still remains a workhorse who never turns down the opportunity to press the opposition and help in midfield while defending.
Simeone demands a physical striker that has a strong work rate and the perfect example is Diego Costa. The Argentine manager could potentially create a striker partnership with Costa and Cavani while Joao Felix could rotate from time to time.
Nonetheless, Edinson Cavani to the Santiago Bernabeu does not seem likely despite the rumours as Real already have an aging squad with Ramos, Modric, Marcelo, Benzema, and Toni Kroos all in their thirties.
Zinedine Zidane will hopefully focus on playing Luka Jovic more next season as he has barely featured for the Whites this season. Jovic could rotate with Karim Benzema for the 2020/21 season to keep the French forward’s feet fresh for the important games while providing the Serbian sufficient game time to adjust to the style of football in Spain.
