Real Madrid lineup a list of alternatives to David Alaba

Real Madrid realize that signing David Alaba will be a difficult proposition and have lined up potential alternatives.

Real Madrid are keen on signing David Alaba in the summer window with Sergio Ramos‘ and Raphael Varane‘s futures at the club remaining uncertain. Alaba’s contract at Bayern Munich runs out this summer and he will be a free agent in the summer. As a result, several top European clubs have expressed their interest in signing the experienced defender, which has left Real Madrid considering for potential alternatives.

As reported by the AS, Jules Kounde is one of the favorites to replace Ramos or Varane at the Santiago Bernabeu. The 22-year-old Sevilla defender has started 24 league games this season and has made a visible impact at Sevilla. However, the Andalusians will not let off their defender without triggering his release clause worth 80 million euros, something which Manchester City refused to do last year.

Pau Torres, is one of the most highly rated defenders in Europe. He is expected to partner Sergio Ramos at the centre-back position for Spain in the upcoming Euros and like Kounde, he is another La Liga defender who stock has risen tremendously. The Villareal defender has attracted attention from the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United, however, a release clause of 65 million euros makes it difficult for the Merengues.

Kalidou Koulibaly has been been one of the most sought after names in the transfer window since the past few seasons. However, the Napoli defender turns 30 this year and as a result, Real Madrid will likely avoid this option considering that they are looking for younger reinforcements.

Jesus Vallejo, who is on loan at Granada has been closely followed by the club and is thought to be the last gasp option. Real Madrid have vested their faith in the 24-year old as they extended his contract at the club till 2025 but has spent only two full seasons in the club’s first team, both limiting him to significant opportunities. However, with the financial constraints at the club, Vallejo can benefit from the situation and prove his worth next season.

Real Madrid are facing a financial distress at the moment and as a result, they are not expected to trigger the release clauses of Joules Koundé and Pau Torres in the summer. However, the club is expected to raise funds by getting rid of Eden Hazard in the summer, who has been riddled with injuries in the past two seasons. Moreover, their primary focus remains offensive signings in the shapes of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.

Unless they are able to sell Varane and cop up a handsome transfer fee, it is unlikely they will be able to sign anybody expensive like Kounde or Torres. Jesus Vallejo remains the best bet for Real Madrid, next season until they solve their financial crisis. Real Madrid are expected to press for a transfer for David Alaba, for whom they will only have to bear the player’s salary. The Austrian’s priority also seems the Spanish side, but the financial terms may prove a hindrance.
