Real Madrid is looking to sign RB Leipzig’s best player after a convincing performance against Atletico Madrid.
After a very disappointing 2018-2019 season, with humiliating defeats at the hands of Ajax and Barcelona, Zinedine Zidane was appointed as Real Madrid coach again, for the 2019-2020 season. What followed, were a series of transfers including youngsters and backups for the squad, and Madrid were crowned champions of LaLiga for the 2019-20 season with consistent performances and the best defensive record the club has seen.
However, Real is not a club satisfied with a domestic trophy. Having 13 Champions League titles under their belt – the highest by a long shot, the Merengues are known to dominate the European competition. For the past two seasons, however, things have not worked out great for the club. The team has formed a solid attack under Zidane, but from the defensive standpoint, as seen in the game against Manchester City and even Ajax for that matter, the back-line crumbles in the absence of captain Sergio Ramos.
Having said that, with Ramos being ageing, a replacement for the Spaniard star is greatly required by the club. One name which has caught the eye of the French coach who fits the role is RB Leipzig Centre back Dayot Upamecano. The 21-year-old has been without a doubt, one of the best players for the Bundesliga side this season, also the impressive display against Atletico Madrid in the knockout stages of the UCL has cemented the youngsters status as one of the best defenders in the market.
The French international will bring a lot to the table for Real Madrid, with physicality and pace and exceptional defending skills and decision making. The 6’1 defender also has a reputation for moving up the pitch for counter-attacks and has surprisingly well control on the ball. He is also good in the air, winning aerial duels. All these qualities make the youngster a perfect replacement for the Real Madrid superstar.
Upamecano had a contract with the German side till 2021 with a release clause exceeding 60 million euros, but reports suggest that he has signed a new contract till 2023 which reduces his release clause to 45 million euros, which is a price the LaLiga champions can agree with. Although Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has stated that they would not be making any big buys this summer, the 21-year-old would be on his radar to bring to the Santiago Bernabeu next season.
