Real Madrid and Manchester United are both looking to rebuild their squads, and could find mutual benefits through a swap deal.
Real Madrid convincingly beat Barcelona to the La Liga title but it’s no secret that they need some reinforcements if they are to compete for the UEFA Champions League next season. Karim Benzema has been delivering the goods up-front but needs a goal-scoring player beside him. However, Zinedine Zidane seeks Paul Pogba from Manchester United.
Zidane wants to reunite with the France international as he believes the player would add control of the midfield whilst also scoring goals on nearly a regular basis. With Luka Modric turning 35 in September, Zizou feels that the time is right to land him compatriot and a swap deal with the Red Devils may be on the cards, Diario GOL claims.
Gareth Bale has effectively been discarded at the Santiago Bernabeu and would be offered in a deal that would see the Wales international had to the Old Trafford. In addition to his services, the Whites are willing to pay an extra 50 million euros that would take the cost of the deal to an estimated 130 million euros.
While getting rid of Bale is certainly a priority in the Spanish capital, it must not be done with Pogba arriving. Zidane has a host of young midfielders such as Federico Valverde, Martin Odegaard and Takefusa Kubo who are there for the future and an indispensable candidate like the World Cup winner will simply hinder growth of everyone.
Not to mention, Luka Modric has been looking like his former self since lockdown in Spain ended and is showing why he is one of the world’s best midfielders. Real Madrid are more likely than not going to extend his contract at the club beyond June 2021 and it’s not hard to understand why. Pogba is certainly not the need of the hour.
Bale heading to Manchester seems a distant prospect as well. The Welshman wants to fulfil his contract in Spain even if that means he’ll not play a single minute as monetary gains seem to be more important to him. Clearly, the Red Devils can’t afford his lofty wages and especially him in general, since Jadon Sancho is their primary target for the summer.
