Real Madrid president Florentino Perez recognizes world-class replacement for aging star defender Sergio Ramos.
After the appointment of Zinedine Zidane as head coach in 2019, Real Madrid has managed to win the La Liga title in his first year back at the club. The Frenchman has exploited the squad depth that the team has, playing with different formations and players for every match, giving the more older and key players rest for important games, and providing the opportunity to young players to prove their worth.
Overall, Zidane seems to have good backups for almost every position/player in the squad but one player the club still struggles to find a replacement for is star defender and captain Sergio Ramos. The Spaniard is the one who leads the backline, and in recent years has been regarded as one of the best defenders in Europe. The 33-year-old also is a great goalscorer, finding the back of the net on several occasions. This ability has also made him the 9th highest goalscoring defender at 110 goals, 3 goals behind 6th place Steve Bruce.
Without the Spaniard, the defense of Real Madrid seems to crumble, as seen in the game against Ajax last season or Manchester City this season, in both of which the defender was sidelined. Finding a replacement for a player of his stature and importance is not easy, however, according to reports club president Florentino Perez has found a solution to this problem in Austrian Defender David Alaba.
The Bayern Munich star has been phenomenal the past few seasons and a key factor for both their treble-winning seasons. With this, he has cemented his place amongst the top defenders in Europe currently. But his contract with the Bavarians is set to expire in 2021, and the German side is yet to offer a contract extension as the Austrian’s agent has demanded a significant pay raise, a request that they are yet to give in to. It is a possibility that they might never give in to the 28-year-old’s demands and even put him up on the market.
Los Vikingos plan to swoop in on this opportunity, as the pacy and versatile quality of the prolific defender would be of great help to the team. There is a problem though, Perez had announced that the club would not be making any big signings this summer due to the economic situations posed by the coronavirus pandemic. The price tag of the former Hoffenheim man is around 60 million euros so a transfer seems highly unlikely at this point. The LaLiga champions would instead be looking to hopefully bring Alaba to the Santiago Bernabeu on a free transfer in 2021 when his contract is set to expire.
Only time will tell whether David Alaba would be signing a new contract which would see him getting paid as one of the best defenders in Europe, or turn to wear the iconic white jersey for the 2021-2022 season.
