In a bid to raise funds for newer signings, Real Madrid could allow one of their best players to depart in the upcoming summer.
Real Madrid face a demanding summer transfer window as the club has been touted to make a number of changes to its existing roster. While the likes of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe remain the focus of attention, the club may also undergo a defensive overhaul, especially with Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos, both likely to leave this summer.
David Alaba seems to have agreed a deal already with the Whites and the official communication of his signing looks like a matter of time. However, the club’s focus is currently on extending the stay of its captain, Ramos. The Spanish international has already been offered a deal with a 10% pay cut, which he is reluctant in accepting for now.
Varane on the flipside, wants to pursue a new challenge, and with his contract ending in 2022, the club prefers to sell him in the upcoming summer rather than allowing him to walk out for free. The club has not yet offered a new contract to the World Cup winner, but it is unlikely that he will stay for much longer if his desires are of a greener pasture over money.
According to Diario AS, Los Blancos have now opened themselves to the prospect of selling Varane. The club’s officials believe that it may be the right time to sell one of their vice-captains, especially because they unanimously want Sergio Ramos to stay. However, they are likely to demand a hefty transfer fee amid Manchester United being interested.
If Florentino Perez does manage to convince Ramos into extending his contract, parting ways with Varane may not be the worst thing to do. Firstly, the player will leave on good terms in all probability, because he seeks another surrounding having already won it all in Madrid. And secondly, Madrid’s options in the heart of defence will be plentiful.
Eder Militao and Nacho Fernandez have both shown that they are quality players, especially when both, Ramos and Varane, were absent against Barcelona and Liverpool lately. In the upcoming season, both of them will have bigger roles to play after inspirational performances this year, with Alaba also being a fourth centre-back option as well.
Do you reckon Varane should be sold off if Real Madrid can get Ramos to extend his stay?
