Liverpool have almost secured a deal for the highly-rated RB Leipzig defender who is all set to arrive at Anfield in the summer.
Liverpool have faced their toughest challenge this season after they lost their talisman, Virgil van Djik through an injury in the early part of the season. The Reds have succumbed under the pressure of being the reigning Premier League champions, and they find themselves five points behind the top four.
To solve the crisis in their defence department, Liverpool have accelerated the process of signing French defender, Ibrahima Konate. The 21-year old RB Leipzig defender is all set to make a switch to Liverpool in the summer after completing his medicals, as reported by the Athletic. Several European clubs were in the race to sign the French prodigy, however, the Reds have made the early move. The report adds Liverpool have already passed a few medical tests to Konate.
Ibrahima Konate joined Leipzig in 2017 and has a contract at the club that expires in the summer of 2023. The Frenchman was on the sidelines for the most part of last season due to an injury. Moreover, he has played 15 matches for the club so far this season and has been marred by an ankle injury. He returned to action only in late January, but Julian Nagelsmann, manager of RB Leipzig uses him very judiciously.
Markus Krosche, sports director of the German club has denied the possibility of a move for the French defender, stating that he will remain at the club. “I think that is not an option for Ibu, he said. He has a long contract with us, he knows what we mean to him and what he means to us,” Krosche asserted.
“He did not have any luck last year with a long injury, but this year he is developing well and he is an extremely important player with a lot of potential. We want to help him to develop further, we play in the Coupe d ‘Europe and have a very good team, so I don’t see a reason for him to leave us,” he added.
It remains uncertain as to whether RB Leipzig will let the talented defender leave in the summer. However, with just two years left on his contract after the current season, it is in the best interest of the German club to cash in. Konate is not expected to extend his contract at the club, with several candidates waiting to launch a bid for him. Moreover, he has been marred by injuries and if he suffers another spell on the sidelines, his market value may see a significant dip.
As for Liverpool, they have taken quite a risk in launching an offer for Konate. The Reds have missed almost all of their centre-backs this season due to injury with the likes of Van Djik, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip spending time on the sidelines. If the 21-year old is able to keep fit, he can form a solid partnership at the back with Van Djik, next season. However, the Premier League is an uncompromising competition and only the fittest can survive on this stage. Hence, the Reds must consider all pros and cons before signing the French defender.
