Real Madrid host Real Sociedad at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium on Monday evening in La Liga. The defending champions will look to overtake Barcelona by grabbing a win and also close the gap between themselves and Atletico Madrid, ahead of the crucial derby coming up.
Zinedine Zidane has welcomed back four players back from injury. Alvaro Odriozola, Federico Valverde, Marcelo and Rodrygo are all part of the 21 men selected for the game. With that said, Karim Benzema, the side’s top scorers still remains unfit.
Thibaut Courtois will continue to keep his place in goal. The Belgian international could go level on clean sheets with Jan Oblak with another one against La Real. He had little work to do against Atalanta and thus, will be entering this match with a very fresh mental state.
Los Blancos have kept four consecutive clean sheets, courtesy of the defensive resilience showed by Nacho and Raphael Varane at the back. The duo will play in the heart of defence once again, this time against one of the division’s most challenging sides.
Ferland Mendy was the matchwinner in the Champions League last week and will not be impacted even by Marcelo’s return from injury. The Frenchman will start, as will Lucas Vazquez. The fullbacks will be key in providing attacking support to a depleted team.
Casemiro is the top-scorer for Los Merengues in the absence of Benzema and will once again assume duties as the defensive midfielder. He chips in with the goods on key occasions and the goal against Valladolid last weekend was a show of his abilities.
Luka Modric and Toni Kroos continue to be at the top of their abilities even in the midst of a busy schedule. The midfielders have been the difference makers of late and will undoubtedly start. One of them will make way later on for Federico Valverde.
Marco Asensio and Vinicius Junior continue to thirst for goals, but the injury situation at Real Madrid has left Zidane with limited resources. The attackers will once again start on the wings, hoping to get on the scoresheet after going through February without a goal.
Isco started against Atalanta midweek, but Real Madrid will need a target man against a team which defends deep. Hence, Mariano Diaz is likely to replace the Spaniard.
