The finalists of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League are set to face each other as Paris Saint-Germain travel to the Allianz Arena.
Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are set to face each other once again in Europe’s elite competition following their last visit at the Estadio da Luiz in Lisbon, where the Bavarians were crowned champions for the sixth time in history.
On Wednesday evening, Mauricio Pochettino‘s side take on Hansi Flick’s Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena to play out the first leg of the quarter-finals. Real Madrid and Manchester City managed to secure first-leg victories against Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund respectively. Tonight, Bayern take on PSG while Porto host Chelsea to complete the first leg of fixtures in the quarter-final.
Bayern Munich are currently in a state of crisis as their injury list continues to grow as Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry join the likes of Marc Roca, Javi Martinez, Douglas Costa and Corentin Tollisso as recent additions. Hansi Flick has a limited squad at his disposal today which could prove to be a cause for concern against Paris Saint-Germain’s well-balanced squad.
For PSG, Marco Verratti, Mauro Icardi, Layvin Kurzawa, Juan Bernat and Alessandro Florenzi are ruled out from the crunch fixture due to injuries. Leandro Paredes has not been included in the squad as well due to a suspension.
With that being said, Mauricio Pochettino will have to make several changes to his starting eleven to fill in the absence of certain starters. Keylor Navas will start in goal as he has been in fine form this season and even put on a masterclass performance against Barcelona in the second leg at the Parc des Princes.
With Navas in goal, Pochettino will look to field Marquinhos and Presnel Kimpembe as the two centre-backs. With Kurzawa, Bernat and Florenzi out with injuries, PSG will have no other option but to turn to Abdou Diallo on the left flank and Thilo Kehrer on the right flank.
The lack of midfield options due to the injury and suspension of Veratti and Paredes, Pochettino will look to consider playing a double pivot of Idrissa Gana Gueye and Ander Herrera. While Gueye and Herrera are set to play a defensive role, Neymar Jr is expected to play out from the centre of the midfield as an attacking midfielder on a free role to make inroads into Bayern’s back-four.
Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria will be the two wingers for Paris Saint-Germain. The former has been gone through a slump in form recently, however, Mbappe has the quality to deliver in crunch fixtures as he has done so in the past. With Mbappe and Di Maria on the wings, Moise Kean is expected to play as the sole striker as Mauro Icardi is still out injured.
