Liverpool travel to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United. Can the Reds end the year on a high to extend the lead at the top of the table?
Liverpool visit the St. James’ Park for the last match of the year after a frustrating home draw against West Brom. With the new COVID strain affecting the Premier League, dark clouds were looming over the match as to whether the match will take place or not. Matip’s injury means that the team’s preparation for the match is far from ideal. Nonetheless, here is the predicted line-up for Jurgen Klopp’s side against Newcastle United.
Alisson Becker will keep his place in goal following stellar performances in the past fortnight since his return. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson will start in their respective position providing the usual endeavour and thrust down the flanks. Matip’s injury means there might be another chance for young Rhys Williams to impress again after an impressive start against Tottenham Hotspur. But Fabinho will lead the backline in absence of all the senior center backs.
Captain Jordan Henderson and reliable Georginio Wijnaldum will provide much needed physical and ball retention in midfield. Curtis Jones will provide energy and will act as the ball carrier in midfield to provide balls for the front three to feed on. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is an option for Liverpool. Nabil Keita has been ruled out of the fixture with Thiago Alcantara having an outside chance of making it to the squad.
The front 3 of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino is expected to start together again. Salah will look to bounce back from a disappointing outing against West Brom at St James Park. Mane who has scored in the last two matches will look to continue his rich vein of form. Firmino will look to continue his December form in the final game of the year.
Liverpool will look to end a successful year on high by extending the lead at the top of the table.
