Here is a look at the starting eleven that Frank Lampard is likely to deploy as Chelsea take on Liverpool on Sunday.
Chelsea host Liverpool at the Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening in the Premier League season’s first clash between the “top six” sides. The Blues got their league campaign off to a good start with a 3-1 win at Brighton on Monday evening and continue being ahead of the defending champions on goal difference heading into the second outing of 2020/21.
Frank Lampard will need to contend with the continued absences of new signings Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech and Thiago Silva. Christian Pulisic’s hamstring injury from last month’s FA Cup Final is still keeping him from being fully fit, meaning that the American winger will also miss the match against the Reds.
Kepa Arrizabalaga conceded cheaply once again last time out but given that Edouard Mendy has not yet arrived, the Spaniard will continue guarding the goal. He let in five against Liverpool last time and the former Athletic Bilbao keeper will not want a repeat of that. A regular four-man backline will look to help the cause.
Reece James, the scorer of a fine goal for the west Londoners against Brighton, will start at right-back. Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma will most likely form an unchanged backline. The latter was brilliant in the previous match and even got a goal for himself. Cesar Azpilicueta could replace Marcos Alonso at left-back after his return to full fitness.
Mateo Kovacic was sacrificed at the Amex Stadium in favour of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, but the Croat will also make his return to proceedings in an early fixture between two champions elects. N’Golo Kante scored a beautiful goal when Liverpool last visited the Stamford Bridge and will keep his place in the eleven, as will Jorginho, the conductor of Chelsea’s gameplay.
Timo Werner will lead the line for a second game running, this time against a side that had expressed active interest in landing him prior to Chelsea. Kai Havertz and Mason Mount will play in the out-wide roles, with both youngsters heading into the fixture with hopes of opening their account for the new campaign.
