Manchester City’s ambitions of landing Kalidou Koulibaly seem to have taken a massive hit as PSG have now entered the frame and are dominating the proceedings.
As per Caught Offside, PSG is now in a commanding position to sign Kalidou Koulibaly. Thomas Tuchel sees the 29-year-old as a potential solution to his side’s defensive troubles and as a replacement for Thiago Silva. However, Manchester City has also been negotiating with the Senegal international as Pep Guardiola believes that Koulibaly could fill in the void of Vincent Kompany. The Sky Blues need to act quickly as it is a situation of now or never.
The former Premier League champion’s relationship with Napoli became strained when the talks for Jorginho were hijacked by Chelsea at the last minute. They have been negotiation with the Italian side through a third party; which is why they haven’t made much progress. PSG has the luxury of negotiating directly with Napol which is the reason why the Ligue 1 champions are in pole position for his signature.
Valued at 75 million pounds, Koulibaly is one of the highly-rated center-backs in the world. City needs a center-back as they cannot rely on Eric Garcia to deliver every time. He is still a prospect who needs time to deliver consistently. With Pep Guardiola under massive pressure to deliver this season, it is quite natural that he sees someone like Koulibaly as the solution to his defensive woes.
Having lost out on the Premier League title, FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League last season, Pep will be asked to deliver this time around. While matching the asking fee won’t be a problem, it is the negotiations that the Citizens are finding hard to combat with against the Naples based side.
The Senegalese defender has featured in 247 matches across all competitions for Napoli, ever since arriving from KRC Genk for a sum of 6.98 million pounds. It is quite a massive development for a player, to see his value go up from 6.98 million pounds to 75 million pounds. It could have been even more if the 29-year-old had put up a better display in Napoli’s UCL clash against Barcelona in the second leg at the Camp Nou.
Who do you think will finally win the race to sign the highly-rated defender?
