Donny van de Beek was close to signing for Real Madrid before joining Manchester United, however, Van de Beek continues to dream about Madrid
Donny van de Beek of Manchester United has been linked with Real Madrid since Ajax stunned the Santiago Bernabeu in the 2018/19 Champions League season. Zinedine Zidane has hinted earlier to have shown interest in the Dutch midfielder, however, the club never officially made an attempt for the midfielder.
Real’s lack of interest saw the Ajax Amsterdam man sign for Manchester United in the 2020 summer transfer window. The Red Devils paid 35 million pounds for the midfielder along with an addition of 5 million pounds that are part of bonuses. However, so far the talented 23-year-old midfielder has not been integrated well into the squad as Van de Beek has just 59 minutes in the Premier League in four appearances.
The possible issue behind the lack of game time for the Dutchman could be that Manchester United never really required another central midfielder. Van de Beek is originally a central midfielder who prefers having a lot of the ball and has the tendency to drift and carry the ball higher up the field. However, Ole Gunnar Solskajer has Bruno Fernandes for that role and there is no chance that the 23-year-old would replace the Portuguese.
Reports now state that the former Ajax Amsterdam midfielder has regretted joining the Red Devils and has dreamt about making a move for Real Madrid. Unfortunately, a move to the Santiago Bernabeu would not change Van de Beek’s fortune as Real currently have Martin Odegaard, Federico Valverde, and Dani Ceballos as their young midfielders for the future.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has defended the player in the media recently and stated that most foreign players take time to adapt to the system in the Premier League. The Norwegian manager assured the fans of Manchester that Van de Beek would certainly play an important role for United this season.
