Manchester United to receive unlikely competition for chief target

Manchester United could be in for stern competition from a fellow Premier League side in their quest of a young forward.

Manchester United got three much-needed points as they grabbed a hard-fought win over Everton on Saturday. Edinson Cavani was on target for the club in a 3-1 win. The Uruguay international scored his first goal since arriving as a free agent from Paris Saint-Germain and him getting off the mark was surely a great sign for the Red Devils.

However, they must keep in mind that the 33-year-old is only a short-term solution. Neither his age, nor his wage demands make it sensible for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to hold onto him past his first year. Even though there is an option of an additional year getting triggered, the club should not try to use it as far as possible.

Instead, they must turn their attentions to closing in on Moussa Dembele from Olympique Lyon. The Frenchman was the Ligue 1 side’s hero in the Champions League last season as a brace from him saw Les Gones past Manchester City in the knockout phase. Unfortunately, the 24-year-old has fallen down the pecking order this season and his value has fallen.

Lyon are willing to sell the former Celtic striker for just 30 million pounds and some additional bonuses which will definitely be within Manchester United’s affordability. The player’s wage demands will not be as high as Cavani’s either, but reportedly, the Red Devils will face competition from an unlikely side- West Ham.

David Moyes is looking to add ammunition to his attack and after failing to do so in the summer, the Scot is expected to have a second bite at the cherry during 2021. As such, the Hammers have struggled to score and have also shortlisted Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic as a potential option in the January transfer window.

As far as the player’s choice is concerned, there is a great likelihood that he may prefer moving to the London Stadium where he has a greater chance of being a regular than at the Old Trafford. However, Manchester United can try to offer him a better contract in order to lure him to the north of England and beat an unexpected competitor.
