Manchester United struggle to get rid of their nightmare of a defender
Since the resumption of football, Manchester United have taken the Premier League by storm with excellent performances. With the addition of Bruno Fernandes in the team and the youngsters stepping up, the team has been phenomenal high up in the pitch. These performances and moments of individual brilliance have led them to finish third in the league and clinch a spot to play in the Champions League next season.
However, the attack and midfield is not the only department that deserves credit for the result. With the addition of Harry Maguire teaming up with Victor Lindelof, the Red Devils have formed what seems to be quite a formidable defensive backline, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw as support.
Currently, they are in no need of an average central defender and would only look at world-class options to accompany Harry Maguire. Having said that, Chris Smalling was sent to A.S. Roma for a one year loan and it is highly unlikely that he will make a return at the Old Trafford at the end of the season as there is no place for the Englishman in the squad.
The 30-year-old defender has had quite a good season at the Italian capital and Roma is looking to take him off the hands of the Premier League side, but there are a few financial issues regarding the deal. The price that the Red Devils have placed on the defender seems to be a bit too high for the Giallorossi’s liking. Roma is not willing to pay more than 16 million euros for the defender while Manchester United is asking for 18 million, according to the Daily Mail.
The Italian club is still trying to negotiate, using the fact that the Smalling wants to stay in Italy to their favor. However, the men in red would not be too worried if the deal does not follow through as there are plenty of big teams with deep pockets like Juventus, Napoli, and Inter Milan ready to swoop in to secure the English center-back if no deal takes place.
