David de Gea has been the subject of widespread criticism this season by the Manchester United fans and pundits.
In a rather surprising turn of events, Manchester United superstar David de Gea has had a rather average season. In addition to that, there have been some rumours linking the 28-year-old as well as bright product Dean Henderson with a move away from the club in the next 12 months. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to have his plans for the future sorted, in such an occurence.
As per Daily Star, Manchester United are eyeing Napoli’s Alex Meret as a potential option in between the sticks, should one of their goalies make up their mind about leaving the club. There still hasn’t been any sign indicating Henderson’s first team future and Chelsea have been monitoring the Englishman’s situation at the club.
Meret is one of the brightest prospects at the back of the field and has superb potential to be one of the world’s best in the future. The 23-year-old has many years left and has sharp reflexes and agility. While de Gea still remains one of the best goalkeepers going around, Meret seems to be the ideal choice to make as a replacement for the 28-year-old, who will need to phased out should his run of poor performances continue.
The Italian did not feature in the 3-1 defeat that his side endured in their away clash against FC Barcelona, in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16. David Ospina was given the nod ahead of him owing to the former’s apparent lack of experience. Perhaps, the result would have been different if Meret had featured since has better reflexes than Ospina. Lionel Messi’s goal for instance, though stupendous, was stoppable if the keeper had reacted a bit sooner.
David de Gea has made some monumental blunders this season. The Spaniard remains the first-choice keeper for the club but Solskjaer is one who chooses based on form and even the former Atletico man may lose his guaranteed spot in the line-up.
The Norwegian reportedly sent numerous scouts to track Meret’s progress this season and that’s one. Dean Henderson flourished in his loan spell at Sheffield United and is desperate to be back at the Old Trafford but the manager wants him to spend another season on loan in a bid to gain sufficient experience before he challenges De Gea’s place in the starting eleven.
Alex Meret is undoubtedly a good choice and the Red Devils have got a tough decision to make between making the ultimate choice between Meret and Henderson. De Gea’s career at the club will most likely be decided with how he performs next season and therefore Ole has time to decide for himself.
Napoli are a club who have been notorious with their negotiations of late, so there’s no given about the fact that the Old Trafford outfit will endure a path of roses whilst signing Meret. The Serie A giants are definitely going to count on the former Udinese shot-stopper for another season, which may only see his stock bulk up if not anything else.
Another name linked to the Red Devils as a potential keeper is the 2016 Premier League champion, Kasper Schmeichel. The Danish keeper is a good choice but will not be preferred much by the club now owing to his age. Kasper is 33 now and hasn’t got much time left in his cylinders, at least speaking in terms of what may be an expensive transfer.
