Manchester United, who were rejected by Erling Haaland a few months ago, have reignited interest in the Borussia Dortmund striker.
Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland has been the talk of the town for several months due to his exploits in European football. The Norwegian has been touted to make a move to one of the bigger clubs in the next summer, but the possibility of him departing Germany by the end of the ongoing transfer window has not been ruled out either.
Chelsea are thought to be interested in signing him but the Blues will have to pay close to 175 million euros for him. Haaland’s release clause of 75 million euros is still inactive and will only come into play in the summer of 2022. His price and the prospect of landing him for much cheaper next year is why a lot of teams have not shown interest in him now.
According to Mirror, Manchester United believe that they now have what it takes to lure Haaland to Old Trafford next summer. The player had been close to moving to United in the past, but he remained unconvinced about the club’s sporting project and the continuity of managers, which is why he decided to pursue an alternate option.
Over the course of the last couple of years, Haaland has scripted himself into being a global superstar and the Red Devils may well be frontrunners in signing him next summer. Manchester United have provided Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a contract until June 2024, whereas the club has also signed Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane in recent weeks.
Solskjaer’s presence at Manchester United could be particularly important in influencing Haaland’s choice because of his relationship with the manager. The 48-year-old handed the striker his first-team debut as a teenager at Molde and has maintained a close and cordial association with his former player, who he now hopes to reunite with in England.
While the stars may be slowly aligning for the Red Devils in convincing Haaland to sign for them, they are unlikely to pursue a move for him this summer. Not only is Dortmund’s asking fee this summer an astronomic figure, but Manchester United are not expected to have a great spending prowess for the remainder of the summer after two big signings.
Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund are ready to suffer a massive loss of 100 million euros next year, which may not be the most ideal situation for them to be in amid a crippling pandemic. They already had to sell Sancho for a discounted figure and next summer, Haaland’s price tag will significantly fall as well due to his 75-million-euro release clause.
In the ongoing summer, the club has signed Donyell Malen, who has been seen as a replacement for Sancho. Marco Rose’s team is keen on keeping Haaland for another season and Borussia Dortmund are likely to build their team around him given his huge influence on the team. Chelsea may also be shunned in their attempts of signing him this year.
Next summer, the likes of Barcelona, Manchester City and Real Madrid will also join the race for signing Haaland for what currently seems like a cut-price move, but other factors will play a massive role in determining the Borussia Dortmund star’s future. His wage demands and Mino Raiola’s commission will certainly be the two most important drivers.
