Manchester United willl not be in the race for one of Europe’s most fascinating wingers during the summer transfer window.
Manchester United have been in the transfer market on the lookout for a winger. Jadon Sancho and Gareth Bale have been the players that have been monitored so far, but a transfer for either seems unlikely. Memphis Depay was another target, but he too seems to have slipped out of the Red Devils’ hands, according to Express.
The Netherlands international has now been associated with a move to Barcelona that could see him join forces with the Argentina international Lionel Messi. Depay has been linked with a move to the Catalan club since the appointment of the Ronald Koeman as he enters into the final year of his contract at Olympique Lyon.
Memphis Depay first came into limelight when he earned a move to Manchester United for 25 million pounds in the summer of 2015 from PSV Eindhoven and was termed as the ‘next Ronaldo’ by the football fans all around the globe.
During his time at the English club, the Dutchman only managed to score seven goals and assisted six times in 53 appearances. After a string of disappointing performances and failure to make a place in the starting 11, Memphis Depay was offloaded to the Ligue 1 side for 14.5 million pounds by the Red Devils.
Since his move, Depay has appeared over 100 times, scoring more than 50 goals and assisting 43 times for the French outlet, attracting interests from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Barcelona had a substandard campaign in 2019/20 and they must bounce back after appointing Ronald Koeman as their head coach. The 26-year-old looks like an ideal option to be deployed on the wings given the uncertainties regarding Philippe Coutinho’s form and Ousmane Dembele’s fitness at the Camp Nou.
The Blaugrana have to sell players before they can get their hands on Depay or perhaps any other target, but it now seems like a clear way for them in the running for his services. Manchester United will not pursue him anymore and go for Jadon Sancho instead next summer.
