Manchester United prepare a bumper five-year contract for a wantaway Real Madrid superstar to partner Harry Maguire next season.
Manchester United are in the dire need of defensive recruitments over the summer transfer window. The Red Devils require a world-class centre-back to partner with Harry Maguire next season as the likes of Eric Baily and Victor Lindelof have been far too inconsistent in defence.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has identified Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane as a prime transfer target. The defender is on the back of an expiring contract that runs out in 2022 and is yet to sign a new deal with the Merengues. It was previously reported that Varane wanted a new challenge in his career after spending 10 trophy-laden seasons at the Spanish capital.
According to ABC Deportes, Raphael Varane has shown no interest in renewing his deal with Los Blancos. The Spanish club is against the idea of letting the Frenchman see out his contract and is open to the option of cashing in on him this summer for a discounted price.
Having said that, the Metro reports that Manchester United are working on a deal worth 40 million pounds to sign Varane from Real Madrid. Solskjaer is keen on signing a pacey centre-back that could work in tandem with Maguire and believes that Varane would perfectly fit the role.
United’s nemesis this season has been their leaky defence that has cost them the league and the Europa League titles. The backline has been overly reliant on Harry Maguire and his late injury in the season was a huge blow to Manchester United.
Apart from that, Victor Lindelof is far too inconsistent with his performances to be a starter for the Red Devils and is a weak link during set-pieces due to his poor defensive prowess in aerial battles. Meanwhile, Eric Baily, who is immensely talented, has struggled to keep fit for the majority of the season.
Raphael Varane on the other end has maintained a rather clean slate in terms of injuries and has been a consistent performer for several years at the highest level. His signing could potentially rebuild the backline and form a rock-solid partnership alongside Maguire.
The Red Devils are willing to offer the 28-year-old a lucrative five-year contract with a comparatively higher salary than what he currently earns at Madrid. If Real Madrid let Varane leave then it could potentially be a big blow for them as Sergio Ramos has also been touted to leave the club following an altercation with the board over a contract renewal.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are willing to back Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the transfer market with a 150 million-pound budget to work with. Varane’s deal is expected to cost United approximately 50 million pounds while the rest can be used to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, who was close to signing for the club last year before the negotiations fell through.
The Red Devils would first have to focus on balancing their inflated wage bill and will look to offload the likes of David de Gea, Diogo Dalot and Phil Jones to name a few before they make an attempt at signing Varane and Sancho.
