Manchester United have made a hole for themselves and are now looking at the available straws to grasp.
Jadon Sancho was seemingly within touching distance of signing for Manchester United, but the Red Devils stumbled in their pursuit of the Englishman. Borussia Dortmund are now confident of holding onto the 20-year-old, thereby forcing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to look at alternatives. Gareth Bale was one of them, but his switch to Tottenham Hotspur means a further diversion from choices.
According to the Express, Manchester United have shortlisted three players, Kingsley Coman, Ivan Perisic, and Douglas Costa as the alternatives for the Manchester City academy graduate.
The transfers of Ivan Perisic and Kingsley Coman will be difficult to be carried out. Ed Woodward and his directorial board believes that Perisic isn’t as marketable as someone like Jadon Sancho and Coman will be hard to land, given the fact that he has shown Bayern Munich what he is capable of. The latter’s heroics in the Champions League final helped his side clinch a hard-fought 1-0 win over a strong Paris Saint-Germain side, which ultimately helped them wrap up a historic treble.
It is believed that the idea is to include Anthony Martial in a swap deal to bring in Coman but then again was being proposed, but United certainly wouldn’t want to lose out on one of their most potent goal-scorers for a player who is their secondary target.
With inexperienced players and poor choices wreaking havoc, Manchester United have some work to do with respect to the right wing, which needs filling as soon as possible. The personal terms between the Dortmund star and the Red Devils have never been an issue but the Bundesliga giants aren’t willing to budge from their asking price of 108 million pounds. Manchester United, on the other hand, are making an offer capped at 80 million pounds.
Douglas Costa to Manchester United seems distant as his performances for Juventus weren’t noteworthy enough in the last season. In addition, the Bianconeri may not be ready to sell the Brazilian at this point in time unless they sign a winger themselves which looks improbable given their pursuit of a striker.
Manchester United have brought this situation upon themselves as they entered the negotiations with a look of desperation. This automatically gave Dortmund the upper hand in the negotiations and understandably so, the fans are getting frustrated given the lack of progress in the deal.
Time is running out for the Red Devils and they need to speed up their thinking process to put a seal on the deal if they want to see Sancho play for them in this season.
So far, the 20-time English champions have only signed Donny van de Beek and his signing seems to be the only one they may close out the summer with. Solskjaer is looking to break a hoodoo of three seasons without silverware, but with as lax support as this from the board, the team may once again suffer, more so with all their rivals having done the refurbishing well.
