Manchester United emerge as favourites to land Liverpool’s prime target despite not being in the race all this while
The 2020-2021 Premier League season is set to be a very competitive one. With Liverpool and Manchester City with good established teams and Chelsea and Manchester United coming up with fantastic buys and performances, the fight will be on next season to lift the League trophy. However, there are a few positions that all these teams still have to get replacements or backups for and they are far from being perfect sides.
Current league winners Liverpool for example, have been phenomenal on both sides of the pitch with lethal attacking capabilities and a rigid defense, but what the Reds lack majorly in is a very good midfield.
They lack creative players that can find out key passes and help in counter-attacks and abuse the deadly pace they possess high up in the pitch. One player that Jurgen Klopp has in mind to fulfill such a role is Bayern Munich’s, Thiago Alcantara.
The Spaniard has been one of the most underrated players in recent years, he has been part of the Bavarian side for seven years, and has been a key factor in those successful campaigns, even with the treble that they won this year.
The player possesses impeccable control on the ball and has a great eye for a pass. The 29-year-old is now looking for a new adventure and Liverpool has been leading the race to sign him for quite some while, but reportedly there’s been a change of tides with Manchester United currently entering the race and looking to hijack the talented midfielder.
The Red Devils have a great midfield, with the likes Bruno Fernandes Paul Pogba, and Nemanja Matic but they too lack a prolific retainer of the ball and with Bruno and Pogba having relatively attacking playstyles, a player like Thiago would a great addition to the team, linking the defense to the great attack they have.
A problem arises though, the Bayern superstar’s demand for wages might be too high for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team and a transfer might be out of the question as this problem also arose regarding the transfer of Jadon Sancho, which too failed to pull through.
Proposed with an option, it would be pretty obvious which team the Spaniard would rather join with the men from Anfield showing more promise to actually win titles as they have proven themselves the past few years, winning the Champions League for the 2018-2019 season and winning the PL the next. But they too would have to sell players to make a move for Thiago, with Gini Wjinaldum the person likely to be sold.
Though they look like a good side, Manchester United still has a mountain to climb in terms of squad rebuilding, while a transfer including the Spanish superstar is not very probable they certainly have become one of the leaders to sign him. However, if they are to propose a good enough deal, United might just have one of the best midfield in the league which will really strengthen their chances of actually having a shot at winning major trophies.
