Manchester United have found themselves on the receiving end of the stick once again, at the end of the summer transfer window
Manchester United made as many as five signings this summer but according to ESPN, none of them were on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer priority list. The signings of Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles, Amad Traore, and Facunda Pellistri might indicate that the Red Devils have had a good transfer window but that is just the tip of the iceberg. The transfer strategy of Manchester United in the past 3-4 years has come to the limelight once again but this time, in the aftermath of the 1-6 drubbing at the hands of their rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.
The Manchester side has been looking for a new right-winger with Jadon Sancho leading the list of preferences. Manchester United failed to live up to any of Dortmund’s demands for the English winger and even missed the deadline before making one last 90 million pound bid in the closing days of the window.
They failed to match Dortmund’s asking price of 108 million pounds which had been increased to 120 million pounds after BVB realized that the Red Devils were desperate to acquire their summer target. This has been the main problem with Manchester United’s transfer strategy as they leave everything to the last minute to make themselves look desperate by last-ditch efforts.
Apart from Sancho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also wanted the likes of Jack Grealish, Dayot Upamecano, and Nathan Ake in his team for the 2020-21 season. Ake was the preferred choice for partnering Harry Maguire in the center of the backline as the defender is left-footed. Jack Grealish’s presence would add a touch of creativity in the final third alongside Bruno Fernandes. Either of Upamecano or Ake would have strengthened a weak-looking Manchester United by a significant margin but it wasn’t meant to be.
Manchester United have got some hard thinking to do and will surely be hurting after the massive 1-6 loss against Spurs. The cracks in the starting eleven of United have been identified and their oppositions are now looking to fully exploit them. With the team lacking a proper center-forward, Ole could decide to toss the coin and invest his faith in Mason Greenwood. Greenwood has the potential to be a big player for the club and we just might see that happen this season.
