Manchester United have occupied a fraction of the transfer rumours with their ongoing Jadon Sancho saga and are now associated with a Chelsea man.
As per Mirror, Manchester United are eyeing to land N’Golo Kante even though Sancho remains their top priority this summer. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to add cover at defensive midfield now that Nemanja Matic is struggling and nobody has really shown the character to inherit the role from the Serbian on a permanent basis.
Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante share excellent chemistry together and the Frenchman will not have any problem linking up with his countryman in the central or perhaps an impeded midfielder’s role. The Premier League duo were among of the main architects of the World Cup win that France registered in 2018 at Russia.
Kante is a holding midfielder and has a decent attacking prowess and his high defensive work-rate and can complement Pogba very well. When Paul Pogba arrived in 2017, he was criticised for not playing according to his value and was consequently shunned for not contributing much in the defensive part, but his performances for France garnered incredible praise.
The 28-year-old hit back at the questions with the simple fact that he scores more goals than Kante does. Mind you, Pogba was brought in for 89 million pounds whereas Kante arrived in Chelsea for 32 million pounds; this formed the main basis of the comparison. On the other side of the coin, Pogba arrived from Juventus and Kante from Leicester, plus, the former excels more in a free-roaming attacking role.
Frank Lampard’s side is set for a major boost following their recent activity in the transfer market; already having acquired the services of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, and now they are said to be on the verge of signing Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz. Kante could be sold by the Blues, who’ve spent a considerable amount and will need to show a balance in their books.
Manchester United will get close to an all-round balance in the squad and a need for a holding midfielder needs to be realised. Pogba can prosper in his preferred role beside Bruno Fernandes, whereas his compatriot in Kante can do the solid defensive work he is so often lauded for, and probably get forward a few times having played an advanced role in his last two seasons.
Manchester United will only explore other options should Dortmund close the window for Jadon Sancho. The status of the ongoing talks as per Fabrizio Romano remains the same. The personal terms have never been an issue but an agreement between the clubs is yet to be reached. Manchester United are running short on time.
However, it is imperative that the club goes for a defensive midfielder even if that means extending its reach in terms of finances and Kante no doubt would be a solid addition.
With Sancho as their top target, do you think Manchester United will be successful in acquiring the winger’s services for the next season?
