Manchester United are planning to sign one of the top defenders of Europe next summer to bolster their weak defence

Manchester United have done a reasonable job in the summer transfer window. The club was able to make four significant signings on the deadline day. Their list of arrivals includes players like Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles, Amad Traore, and Facundo Pellestri. However, the Red Devils did miss out on key targets like Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish, and Nathan Ake. It is expected that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will make the most out of the current new signings as the club now has some serious depth.

However, the Manchester side still lacks the presence of a good center-back and this issue has hurt the team in their recent outings after being battered at home by Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites embarrassed United at home after scoring six against them and the primary reason was the lack of a strong centre-back.

According to Mirror, Manchester United has already planned on lining up a move for Leipzig center-back, Dayot Upemacano, and are planning to secure the services of the defender next summer. The Frenchman had been one of the prime members of Leipzig setup last season. The 21-year-old defender made 28 appearances for the German outfit and has been a solid member at the back which has seen him being linked with several top clubs including Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Upamecano has shown a great sense of responsibility and maturity in his short stint at the Red Bull Arena. Since he arrived in 2017, the centre-back has improved himself as a player with every passing season. Apart from the physical aspect, the French defender is exceptional on the ball and can provide options when needed to start an attack from the back.

Manchester United have plans for the French international as the club is willing to bring in more defensive reinforcements to improve their performance at the back. The Red Devils believe that they will be able to bring the centre-back on a more affordable price tag next summer. Reports state that the Leipzig defender might cost around 38 million pounds.

The ongoing season has already pointed out the defensive fragility at Old Trafford and United are gutted to have missed out on defensive targets like Nathan Ake and Kalidou Koulibaly. The arrival of Dayot Upamecano next summer will hopefully bring an end to United’s defensives woes. Ed Woodward will have to find a way to land one of the best young defenders of European football while competing with several other clubs for his signature.
