Manchester City suffer a huge blow in their bid to sign Lionel Messi this summer as questions around his future continue to grow.
Barcelona star, Lionel Messi had made up his mind to leave Camp Nou before the start of this season, a year before his current contract would expire. Manchester City were one of the frontrunners to sign the Argentine star, as they are one of the only few clubs, who can afford his extravagant wages.
The presence of Pep Guardiola at City made the signing of Messi look more realistic. However, the move was blocked by former president Josep Maria Bartomeu. Leo Messi was forced to continue for another season at the Camp Nou and this one could potentially be his last season in Spain.
However, as reported by Football Insider247, things have taken a huge turn after the appointment of Joan Laporta as the Barcelona president. The 33-year-old has huge faith in the new president and is considering an extended stay at Camp Nou.
At the inauguration ceremony, Laporta made it clear that his main priority is to ensure that Messi stays at the club. The duo get along well with each other and were also pictured embracing each other a few days ago. Moreover, the Argentinian has started to believe again in the future of the club after their recent run of form. He has also vested his faith in the manager, Ronald Koeman. The Dutch manager has finally started to see his game plan working out in recent weeks after a shaky start to the season.
Paris Saint-Germain are another club in the race to sign Messi in the summer. However, unless the likes of Manchester City or PSG come up with a huge offer, it is unlikely that the Argentinian will leave the club. He will be open to hearing new proposals from Joan Laporta provided that the president can offer him an equally lucrative contract that PSG or City plan on proposing.
As things stand, Lionel Messi looks a much happy figure on the field. Despite bowing out of the Champions League last 16, Barcelona made it to the finals of the Copa del Rey after an incredible comeback against Sevilla. They are just four points behind the top placed, Atletico Madrid in La Liga. Only time will tell what is in store for Lionel Messi.
