Manchester City are in talks with Benfica centre-back as they look forward to add another defender to their roster this summer.

Manchester City have had a busy time in the transfer market as they have beefed up their squad with the signings of Ferran Torres and Nathan Ake, and continue to probe for newer additions in the final weeks of the transfer window. The club is looking to add more defensive options in their present squad and the absence of quality  centre-back to partner with Aymeric Laporte has been an issue for the Citizens.

Pep Guardiola’s side has reportedly contacted Ruben Dias from Benfica over a potential move to the Etihad Stadium. The Portuguese international will reportedly cost around 55 million euros. The need for a right footed central defender can influence City to pay the quoted amount for the defender.

Dias has been  a regular starter for the side as his last campaign with the club saw him make 33 appearances and score two goals along with two assists in the Portuguese top-flight. The tall centre-back  has been solid at defence as he helped his side finish second in the league table.

City have had problems with their centre-backs and Nicolas Otamendi has been one of the kinks in the armour for the club. The Argentine international has fallen down the pecking order owing to his inconsistent performances at the Etihad and Guardiola has even given more preference to the likes of Eric Garcia and Fernandinho at the heart of defence.

The potential transfer  for 23 year-old Dias is likely to involve a swap deal with Otamendi being considered as a likely option for the switch. Pep Guardiola’s men struggled defensively against better opposition last season and just won the EFL Cup even with a world-class squad, signalling the desperate need for a quality centre-back prior to this season getting underway.

Since the departure of Vincent Kompany, the club has had issues in finding a replacement for the Belgian defender. The Citizens will hope that their search for a right footed central defender comes to an end with the arrival of the Portuguese defender as talks with Kalidou Koulibaly also seem to have been stuck in a stalemate.

For now there has been no official word on this potential transfer  but both clubs are be expected to complete the deal by the end of this week.
