Manchester City is looking into the option of giving up on the race to sign the Senegalese star defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

Manchester City had lifted the Premier League trophy for the 2018-2019 season with an impressive 32 wins and 98 points. The title was well deserved by the team as they put up a superb campaign under manager Pep Guardiola. The Sky-Blues were phenomenal on both ends of the pitch managing to score 95 goals and conceding just 23 across the season.

It was expected of Pep’s side to continue this marvelous run for the next season as well, however, their star defender Aymeric Laporte was out due to injuries for most of the season, and having no good defensive backups, the team suffered and lost out on the chance to win the league in the 2019/20 season.

The main flaw with the team was the lack of reinforcements in the center-back position which was revealed due to Laporte’s injury, and the Spaniard has taken steps in the correct direction with the signing of Nathan Ake. But what City still needs, is a defender who is more physical, experienced, and dominant in the backline, someone more Van Dijk-esque which they had found in Napoli’s star defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Senegalese star, in his six seasons in the Serie-A, made his name as one of the current best defenders in the world, with his physicality, presence on the pitch, and excellent defending skills. The Sky Blues were in the race to sign the 29-year-old for quite a while with rumors suggesting that an offer of 53 million euros was already rejected by the Italian giants. The current asking price for the prolific defender stands at 70 million euros and Pep’s side has been given a deadline for this weekend to submit a final offer, which they are struggling to do.

Consequently, if reports are to be believed City might be looking to put an end to further negotiations and put a stop in their pursuit of signing the Senegalese star instead. Gennaro Gattuso, Napoli’s manager refused to let go of a player like Koulibaly at a cheap price, and as it stands Partenopei already does not share a good relationship with Manchester City due to the transfer of Jorginho that fell through a few seasons ago.

All these factors make it an even more difficult task for Guardiola to sign Koulibaly, which means that the famed Spanish coach would be forced to look for options elsewhere to mend the defensive flaws in his team.
