Manchester City is looking to sign Ajax Amsterdam superstar as a solution to their defensive problems in the left-back position.
Manchester City start to the 2020-2021 Premier League season has been well below average. With three games played, the club currently sits on the 14th position amassing just four points to their name. This comes as a drastic change in the situation of the club from the 2018-2019 season, during which the Sky Blues managed to win the league along with all three of the other domestic trophies.
In the 2019-2020 season, Pep Guardiola‘s side’s performances fell marginally. The club struggled defensively and concluded the season 18 points behind league winners Liverpool. To accompany that, the English side failed to win the Carabao Cup and lost out to Olympique Lyon in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. Throughout the course of the season, the team suffered due to injuries and inconsistency in the backline which arguably cost them a successful campaign.
The main breaking point of the team happened to be the injury of their star centre-back Aymeric Laporte and due to the lack of backups, central defensive midfielder Fernandinho had to take his place. To fix this, Guardiola made a number of signings in the position with Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias. The side still has a strong right flank with Joao Cancelo and Kyle Walker, but the left-back position however still proves to be a problem for the team with Benjamin Mendy struggling with injuries.
According to reports, the former Barcelona manager has found an ideal candidate who can fill his fullback position. Nicolas Tagliafico, a player currently at Ajax Amsterdam has made headlines due to his stellar performances with the Dutch side, providing five goals and seven assists for the side last season. The 28-year-old also has plenty of experience playing in the Champions League against the world’s best and has also been extremely consistent for the past few seasons.
An ideal left-back under Guardiola would require a good passing skill and pace, whereas good crossing into the box also comes as a handy skill. These are all the qualities that Guardiola would want in his player and Tagliafico seems to perfectly pass his checklist and the Spaniard would be looking forward to adding the prolific fullback to his squad for the 2021-2022 season, next summer.
The Argentine will reportedly set back Manchester City around 20 million euros, and it remains to be seen whether Ajax’s star will be making a switch to the Premier League. Barcelona are also exploring a transfer for the Argentinian defender with Jordi Alba ageing.
