Manchester City are looking to revitalize before mounting a much better challenge for the Premier League than this season.
Manchester City are supposedly looking for a central defender in order to replace Vincent Kompany, who departed last year. John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi have simply not been good enough whereas a long-term injury to Aymeric Laporte saw their Premier League come crashing down.
Eric Garcia is quickly establishing himself as one of the key starters of the squad. This became evident when he was chosen ahead of the likes of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi against a side which has played some serious top-notch attacking football in Liverpool. Garcia had a key role to play in the 4-0 clean sheet against the Reds.
Yet, the very fact that someone like Garcia who lacks experience is chosen ahead of some seasoned players such Stones and Otamendi highlights the defensive problems of the Citizens.
Their sights are set on the Napoli and Senegal defender, Kalibou Koulibaly. The Citizens are close to agreeing a deal for the lucrative superstar, according to Sports Illustrated, and their most difficult hurdle in a bid to sign the player seems to have been tackled.
City’s UEFA Champions League ban is unlikely to prove a hindrance to the progression of the deal involving Koulibaly. In fact, it is believed that the deal is close to its completion and the personal details of the defender have been acquired by the club.
However, a fee is yet to be agreed upon and apparently it is set to be around 80 million pounds.
While Napoli’s Koulibaly is perhaps the best defender in Italy’s top-flight and wanted product all across Europe, he might not be the best choice because he’s 29 now and has probably left another 2-3 years’ worth of prime football in him and with an expensive signing, Garcia’s growth may impede.
Having said that it must also be borne in mind that the Premier League giants have limited options as a result of their Champions League ban, and there’s a very good chance that bringing in the 29-year-old might give them an instant defensive boost.
