Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum has signed a deal with Barcelona until June 2024 ahead of his free transfer move this summer.
Barcelona have hit the ground running with Joan Laporta as their president in the transfer market. The Catalans have already agreed to personal terms with Eric Garcia and Sergio Aguero from Manchester City and are now close to finalizing a deal with Olympique Lyon’s Memphis Depay. Fabrizio Romano reports that Georginio Wijnaldum has penned a deal with Barcelona until 2024. The Dutchman will imminently be the club’s fourth free signing of the summer.
Ronald Koeman wanted Wijnaldum when he took over the club in 2020 following the sacking of Quique Setien, however, the Dutchman has had to wait for an entire season for the arrival of his preferred signing. The 30-year-old’s inclusion into the squad next season will help reshape the midfield into an energetic pressing machine.
His presence in midfield will bring in a level of athleticism and physicality. The Dutch international is a resilient presser of the ball and has the ability to support both ends of the field as a box to box midfielder. Apart from his defensive contribution, the Liverpool midfielder is equally effective in the final third due to his ability to carry the ball forward and find the back of the net.
His partnership with Pedri in the heart of the midfield will be one to look forward to at Camp Nou due to their attacking prowess. Wijnaldum is also versatile and can play deeper in the midfield, which could see him rotate positions with Frenkie de Jong or Sergio Busquets from time to time.
Joan Laporta has done a commendable job so far and has supported Ronald Koeman in the transfer market. The Dutchman wanted Eric Garcia, Gini Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay since his first day in the office before 2020/21 kicked off. Since Koeman has been backed in the transfer market, the board will demand a greater amount of success in the league and Champions League having only won the Copa del Rey this time around.
