Liverpool plan to sign a wanted defender from Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid
Liverpool have been off-beat since the resumption of football post lockdown. The Reds led by Jurgen Klopp have been shaky off the late and their recent defeat to Arsenal in the FA Community Shield at the Wembley came as a surprise to many.
Former Borussia Dortmund manager Klopp has hinted at the media that the club needs some change specifically especially in the defense and midfield. The Reds have been linked with Thiago Alcantara of Bayern Munich, Adama Traore of Wolverhampton, and now Jose Maria Gimenez of Atletico Madrid, according to Don Balon.
The 25-year-old is an excellent defender. Gimenez has all the qualities in that of a world-class defender, the 25-year-old Uruguyuan international is fast, strong, and is brilliant in the air. At 25, the player is already wanted by Pep Guardiola, Frank Lampard, and now Jurgen Klopp.
Gimenez would also bring a lot of experience wherever he goes. At Atletico Madrid, the defender has played the Champions League final twice and has won the UEFA Europa League in 2018 and subsequently the UEFA Super Cup. The South American defender is well experienced and is ready for the Premier League.
The only issue for Liverpool in the player’s price tag. Gimenez is on contract with Atletico Madrid until the summer of 2023 and is currently valued over 60 million euros. If the Reds are to sign the La Liga man then the club would have to trade cards with a key player.
Gini Wijnaldum has been linked with a move to Barcelona and if the player does move for a decent fee then 2019/20 Premier League winners could consider Gimenez. However, the club would have to face stiff competition from Chelsea and Manchester City as well.
It is highly unlikely that Liverpool would sign the player this summer. Only Thiago Alcantara who is available for 30 million euros and is on the final year of his contract seems like a realistic signing for the Reds.
