The two Premier League giants ready to battle it out for the signing of defensive reinforcement.
Manchester City and Liverpool are already looking to strengthen their squads defensively after showcasing weakness in a relatively successful campaign.
While Liverpool are crowned Premier League champions, they fell short in their Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid despite being defending champions. Meanwhile, Manchester City have come second in the League and are still going strong in the race to European glory with the second-leg remaining to be played against Real Madrid.
Both Liverpool and Man City coaches, Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, agree that their individual squad requires a defensive upgrade in order to have a greater chance at success next season but have interestingly chosen the same player to do the job.
The most successful club in the UEFA Europa League, Sevilla, have that special player who is desired by both the legendary coaches. Brazilian center-back, Diego Carlos, has had a phenomenal debut season with the Spanish side which has attracted many admirers.
He is a pacy defender capable of playing anywhere in the back-four line. Sevilla signed the Brazilian for 15 million euros a year ago and had already planted a 75 million release clause in which the two English giants are reportedly ready to pay.
However, both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have also expressed their desire to sign the versatile star with Sevilla prepared to listen to the highest bidder. The Andalusia side are currently fourth in the La Liga table, a clear indication of their strength.
This does mean that they have secured a place in next year’s Champions League, which might refrain them from making a sale this summer as it could significantly hinder their chances of a successful campaign.
The financial implications of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic may, in fact, be able to force their hand, with sporting director Monchi being known for his ambition of selling quality players in order to make huge profits off them.
