Liverpool locate a replacement for Wijnaldum from the Serie A

Liverpool are looking to sign a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum and have turned to one of Serie A’s finest talents as an option.

Liverpool announced the arrival of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig last month. The central defender’s signing seemed imminent since a few months before being made official. However, the Reds require a few more reinforcements to their squad if they are to contend for the Premier League next season along with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.

One of the team’s focal points, Georginio Wijnaldum, has left for Paris Saint-Germain which means that there is a big hole to fill in midfield. According to Il Messaggero, Liverpool want to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as a replacement for the departed Dutchman. Milinkovic-Savic is currently at Lazio and has three more years on his contract, but could be available for sale this year.

Milinkovic-Savic has been in prominence for several years now and it has seemed as if a move to one of the world’s top clubs is overdue. Liverpool certainly fit the bill and the 26-year-old’s profile also matches that of a perfect replacement for Wijnaldum. Last season, he scored eight times and assisted nine goals in the Serie A with Lazio, who finished sixth in the competition.

Exactly like Wijnaldum, the Serbian international is a talented box-to-box midfielder who contributes equally to the defensive department as in the offensive. Apart from his preferred role of a central midfielder, the Lazio superstar is also capable of adapting to all the other possible roles in the engine room as well as on the offensive flanks.

At Liverpool and in the Premier League especially, he is bound to be a success and his price tag could turn out to be a bargain going forward. Milinkovic-Savic is physically astute and has an incredible awareness of the game. His passing and other attacking attributes arguably trump Wijnaldum’s, whilst his young age means he can be a long-term investment.

Serbia have also failed to qualify for the European Championship, which gives Liverpool the opportunity to sign Milinkovic-Savic in the next few weeks. By doing so, they will be able to integrate the midfielder into their pre-season plans and have him fully read with the rest of the squad by the start of the 2021/22 campaign in August.
