Liverpool have reportedly identified a cheap replacement for Virgil van Dijk as the club has set sights on Ajax youngster
Liverpool has been on the search for a new center-back since their star defender Virgil van Dijk had sustained anterior cruciate ligament rupture in the Merseyside derby against Everton last month. The Dutch international is expected to stay on the sidelines for a lengthy period of time and has been slated to make a return in April 2021.
The Reds have used the likes of Fabinho, Nathaniel Philip in the centre-back position in the absence of the former Southampton man. However, there have been speculations that the English outfit has been in search of a new central defender and is considering to bring in a replacement for their injured star. The club has marked Kalidou Koulibaly and Dayot Upamecano as the possible options and might have to pay a fee north of 50 million pounds.
However, recent developments suggest that Liverpool have found a cheap alternative for Van Djik in the form of Perr Schuurs. The Ajax youngster has impressed the Eredivisie side since he arrived in 2018 and presently has been handed a starting spot in the first-team. The defender had previously given a trial at Anfield as a 17-year-old but was sent back to the Dutch League to improve and develop him as a player with more exposure to first-team football.
The Reds are interested to sign the former Fortuna Sittard man as they look to bring in a potential cover for the Dutch international. According to Transfermarkt, the 20-year-old defender has a market valuation of 9 million euros which makes him altogether an affordable option for the club’s centre-back position.
At present, Liverpool is off to a good start in the Premier League as the defending champions are first in the league table with 17 points in seven games. Their Champions League campaign too has been impressive so far as they are currently table toppers in Group D.
