Liverpool are pondering over the possibility of signing Bayern Munich’s versatile defender to cover the loss of Virgil van Dijk
It was an eventful Merseyside derby when Liverpool took on Everton at Goodison Park a couple of weeks ago. The match produced great moments from both the teams as the game ended in a 2-2 draw. However, Liverpool ended up losing their most important player, Virgil van Dijk, who has ruptured his ACL and is set to miss a major portion of the season.
Desperate times call for desperate measures as Jurgen Klopp chose to deputies the Brazilian midfielder, Fabinho, as his first choice center back. The 27-year-old midfielder had a great run as he produced solid performances against Sheffield United and Ajax.
However, things took a wrong turn when the former Monaco man suffered a hamstring injury in the first half of the match against the Danish opponents, FC Midtjylland in the Champions League, increasing the tension to the right defensive cover for Liverpool until Van Dijk’s return.
Nevertheless, situations look a little better for Liverpool fans, as reports indicate that the Merseyside club could make a move for the Bayern Munich ace, David Alaba. The Austrian has rejected a new contract at Bayern, suggesting that his future lies away from the Bavarian giants.
Since the arrival of Lucas Hernandez and Alphonso Davies, the 28-year-old Austrian left-back has converted himself into a center back in recent years, joining Jerome Boateng in the heart of Bayern’s defense. In his time with Munich, the Austrian has managed to appear in +more than 390 appearances, registering 31 goals and 49 assists in all competitions.
The Austrian’s contract expires in the summer and if the Champions League winners fail to negotiate a deal with another club in the stipulated time, the Austrian could leave the club for free. It is expected that the club from Bavaria does not want to miss out on a transfer fee and be looking offload him in the winter transfer market.
With options closing down for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, acquiring David Alaba could prove out to be extremely beneficial as he possesses the quality of playing in multiple positions and provide a great defensive cover until the Dutch defender recovers from his frightful injury.
