Liverpool are looking to make it an explosive winter transfer window as they look to bolster their squad for another league title.
Liverpool continue to take major strides towards a second successive Premier League crown, thanks to a 2-1 win against Sheffield United. However, Jurgen Klopp has enough of a reason to worry considering that his best defender in Virgil van Dijk will be out for the remainder of the season and perhaps longer, following an ACL injury.
Van Dijk collided with Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside Derby two weekends ago and his injury seems much worse than initially feared. A grade three damage to the cruciate ligament may well extend his recovery period to one year and therefore, it is imperative that the Reds replace their colossal figure with someone of similar calibre.
Express claims that the Anfield-based outfit will go for RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano once the January transfer window opens. The Frenchman proved his credentials on the biggest stage in the 2019/20 Champions League as his club progressed to the semi-final, claiming the scalp of Atletico Madrid in the process.
Upamecano was the subject of wide speculation in the summer as the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United along with other European giants showed interest in landing him. Although the 21-year-old ended up extended his stay in Germany, his club and representatives will remain alert for any possible offers.
Klopp’s side might make an offer worth 40 million pounds, which may be enticing enough for Leipzig to let go of their key man. At the same time, a relatively low price tag from the defending league champions may trigger a reignition of interests from Arsenal and Manchester United, who were also monitoring the player since a few months.
While the Gunners and the Red Devils might both be able to match Liverpool’s, the recent progress and supremacy of the Reds under Jurgen Klopp could see them win the race for him. Should Liverpool manage to land the France international, they will be in for a treat because Upamecano is certainly one for the future.
Once van Dijk recovers, a pairing of the Dutchman along with a potential new arrival into the Anfield may eclipse any defence across Europe in terms of quality. At this point in time, Klopp has Joe Gomez and Joel Matip as the two natural central defenders at his disposal, but the club’s latest target surely surpasses both of them in every regard.
