Liverpool begin a second probe into signing Barcelona superstar

Liverpool are going to reignite interest in a Barcelona player that was on their radar some time ago as well.

Liverpool began the defence of their Premier League title last weekend with a 4-3 win over Leeds United. Jurgen Klopp’s men were not at their best against the newcomers and will face a tougher challenge on Sunday when they take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Regardless of the result in London, the Reds must know that they need signings to compete.

Chelsea and Manchester City, who are likely to be their fiercest rivals to the premiership this season have done a good job in rebuilding. Klopp has signalled that Liverpool cannot spend like a club owned by oligarchs, but in truth, they haven’t made a single signing despite there being noticeable holes in the squad.

Jurgen Klopp’s midfield is lacklustre, to say the least and for a Premier League champion, it is unbelievable to have that much of a hindrance in creativity through the central areas of the field. Having said that, they are on the verge of signing Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich which will solve most of their worries.

Apart from adding a midfielder, the Merseyside outfit also needs to land players that can provide squad depth and rotation during the busy periods of the season. The lack of decisive players showed in the latter stages of last season after lockdown wherein the team struggled to maintain consistency while fixtures were being held every three days on average.

To strengthen his attack and provide backup to the lethal trio of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, Klopp has also asked for Watford superstar Ismaila Sarr. The 22-year-old had a terrific season with the Hornets but their relegation to the EFL Championship meant that he is the subject of interest from several top-flight sides.

While even the player himself has been seemingly interested in joining the Anfield-based side, Watford’s rigidity is proving to be a hurdle for Liverpool in their bid to sign him. Hence, the six-time European Cup winners will be turning their attention to Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele, as claimed by Foot Mercato.

Dembele has had an injury-marred career at the Camp Nou ever since joining from Borussia Dortmund. Earlier this year, he suffered his biggest setback after suffering another fitness snag that left him on the treatment table for six months. His return to the squad was met with Ronald Koeman’s appointment and it’s unclear whether the Frenchman will have place in the squad.

Koeman has already told Arturo Vidal and Luis Suarez that they can leave the club, whereas he will be counting on Philippe Coutinho for the upcoming season. Given that the Dutchman has vested interest in signing Memphis Depay as well, it is unlikely that Dembele will be provided with the minutes he is looking for at Barca.

Since Barcelona have been told that they need to sell players before signing anyone, Dembele may be allowed to let go in the event of a reasonable offer. The France international’s valuation may not be as high as a year or two ago because he has simply become a liability at a downtrodden La Liga side, thereby favouring Liverpool.

However, it remains to be seen whether the side requires a player who will demand the wages of a crucial player but may not have those many opportunities. Currently, Mane and Salah are indispensable at Liverpool and offer a lot more than Dembele would be able to bring, meaning his minutes could clearly be limited in the Premier League.
